Sandisk Service Sucks September 16, 2008

My school purchased a couple of 1GB Sandisk Cruzer Profiles with Fingerprint scan security (flash drives) last year.  One of the drives reports that the storage capacity is only 17.9 MB.  No problem since it is under warranty.  I contacted Sandisk support and explained the problem.  We went back and forth for months.  I reformatted the drive as per their instructions and everything and still no luck.  They will replace it but have stopped selling this model so they will give me another comparable on.  Sounds good right.  Wrong.  I only have the packing slip that clearly shows that my school received a shipment with two of these drives clearly indicated on the slip.  Not good enough because they want the original invoice.  I was on the phone and explained 3 times that I did not have the invoice and could not get it (lost in the office somewhere).  They ran me around again only to email me later after I got off the phone that they needed the proof of purchase.  ^**^&%$%$##!!!!!  Take my advice.  Don’t buy anything Sandisk sells.  Their service sucks and they run you around hoping you will eventually give up.  Bunch of &&^^&%$%!

Proposed Copyright Bill in Canada is Draconian August 30, 2008

Here is an excerpt from an article by Charles Moore:

If Bill C-61 passes, peer-to-peer file sharing and downloading any copyrighted material without permission as well as making material available for others to download would become illegal, as would circumventing digital locks (Digital Rights Management or DRM) put on music or software by manufacturers. “Time-shifting-” recording a TV or radio using tape or a digital device in order to view it later – would still be legal, but recording television shows and movies for compilation in personal libraries or collections would not, nor would ripping DVDs to iPod Video if a digital lock has been imposed to block change of format. Posting copyright-protected work onto a website such as Facebook or YouTube or making music libraries available for peer-to-peer access on the Internet will also be prohibited, with penalties of up to $20,000 per infringement (http://telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com/opinion/article/391991).

I have two big objections to the bill.

Firstly, the bill proposes to make it illegal to even have copyrighted digital files on your computer that you may have downloaded on a p2p network.  Some would say that this makes sense since the owner did not obtain the files legally.  My question is do you want the government to have the legal right to search your computer for these files and invade your privacy rights?  My understanding is that they already have the right to arbitrarily search your laptop when crossing the US-Canada border.  The Canadian government has no business in the computers of the nation (with apologies to Trudeau for the misquote).

Secondly, making it illegal to remove DRM from files is ridiculous.  If I buy a song in iTunes and I am stuck with listening to it on my iPod only.  I can’t stick it on my Sansa mp3 player.  Well, I can but I would have to remove DRM, which according to this bill would make me a criminal despite the fact that I legally own the file.

Let me make it clear that I support intellectual property rights and believe that authors and artists should be compensated for their work.  I think that copyright regulations already go too far and inhibit openness and the sharing of ideas.  Now, Bill C-61 would institute a digital tyranny that would be difficult to curtail later when we realize too late that it has gone too far.

CRTC Ruling on Throttling expected in October 2008 August 18, 2008

Bell and Rogers are throttling Internet access of customers that use too much bandwidth, which they say is resulting in a bottleneck.  The Canadian Association of Internet Providers is challenging their right to do this saying they have no right to act as Internet gatekeepers.  Important since many of their members buy Internet access from Bell and Rogers and it affects their customers.  The cbc.ca reports that a decision is expected in October.  Read more here: Internet throttling ruling due by end of October.

Story on cbcnews.ca about Telus urging Canadian government to invest the profits from a wireless auction into broadband throughout Canada.  I think this is the most important technology issue facing Canada.  Canada needs to provide equal, high quality, broadband access to all Canadians.  The big companies like Bell, Rogers, and Telus have no economic rationale for doing this and the governement needs to step in to provide that incentive.  Really, isn’t this one of the reasons whe we have a government?

Cell phone companies are nickle and diming their customers August 11, 2008

I have a basic cellphone that I have on a pay as you go plan with Telus.  I don’t surf the web or text message with it.  I bought it a few years ago when I was commuting on the TCH to work in Newfoundland and it was handy to have while traveling in the winter.   I am a techie and I would love to buy a phone and use the latest and greatest gadgets, but I cannot afford it.  I checked a Blackberry out from Telus and it would cost me $75/month just for a basic plan.  The iPhone came out in Canada and a basic plan by Rogers is $30/month, but I’ve heard that the screen keyboard on it is horrible and it is buggy crashing on users all the time.

I think cellphone service providers are getting like the banks and will nickle and dime you into poverty if you are not careful.  Now in Canada text messages that you receive on your phone will be a charge to customers without a text messaging plan.  Here’s an article explaining the change:

In a course I completed recently for my masters one group looked at the trend of using cellphones for learning.  I wonder how this will affect any future plans to extend learning to the mobile market?

digg add on for Firefox August 8, 2008

I just installed the digg addon for Firefox and my first impression is mixed.  My main problem with it is the amount of real estate it takes up on the toolbar.  I have a digg button on the far left and a notifications button on the far right with nothing in between (a waste).  True, you can toggle this entire toolbar on or off from a button placed next to the location bar but why can’t I resize this toolbar (which is locked) and move it on another line with another toolbar to save space?  I do like the notifications that appear at the bottom right of the browser, but it does not keep track of the stories you have viewed and the same stories will appear if you go back later.  I viewed the video about the addon by creator, Kevin Rose, and I think there may be a difference between the addon used in Firefox on a Mac and PC (I have Vista).

Wireless XP SP3 Problem Solved! August 3, 2008

I finally solved the wireless problem that XP SP3 created.  I installed SP3 and afterward my linksys usb adapter stopped working.  I took the opportunity to reformat the drive and reinstall XP Home and when I installed SP3 the same thing happened again.  I tried setting up the adapter with the linksys software and without and no luck.  Then I tried to manually setup the adapter and enter in the encryption password for WPA2 that I setup on the router and I noticed the password box did not give me enough spaces to type the password.  Ta da!  I shortened the password and voila!  Works like a charm.

I am so ticked off with Service Pack 3 for XP.  I have a wireless usb linksys adapter (wusb54gc) that was working perfectly with my linksys wireless router.  When I installed SP3 it killed my wireless.  I flattened the computer and used my recovery disk to set my computer up again thinking a clean setup would do the trick.  Same thing happened.  You gotta love service packs.
