Okay. I`ve been patient. I bought a new laptop (Acer 5720-6200) last November with Vista Home Premium on it. I had heard about all the gripes and complaints about Vista. I understood that with any new OS you have to be patient and let the bugs get fixed with updates from Microsoft. Well, I am still waiting for some to be fixed. SP1 update for Vista was a disappointment. Not the major fix I had expected. Here is a list of some of the problems:

  • Vista freezes once in a while (not often but enough to be annoying).
  • Windows Firewall in Vista keeps trying to turn itself on even though I have the Norton Personal Firewall running.
  • When I logout and leave my laptop for a while or when someone else logs in and then logs out, the screen goes black and does not come back.
  • Some of the XP programs I run (like Robolab 2.5.2) crash my system despite running the compatibility wizard.
  • Vista detects an error in my built-in laptop graphics card (nVidia GeForce 8400m GS) but sends me to nVidia which in turn sends me to Acer`s web site for an update which does not exist.

Overall, I have to say that I like Vista and I have been pleased with the wireless capability of my Acer laptop. It even runs Second Life smoothly and the majority of programs I`m running work well. But I sure expect my computer not to freeze and not to experience the blackscreen of death.

I don`t mind enduring a few headaches but I do expect a fix. Oh, yeah, I almost forgot. What a ripoff to upgrade to Ultimate. Sheesh, don`t get me started on the new MS Office 2007. way to go Microsoft! Change the file formats so nothing opens in 2003. *(&?%%$//”"”/”%?&?*()(!!!!
