Cell phone companies are nickle and diming their customers August 11, 2008

I have a basic cellphone that I have on a pay as you go plan with Telus.  I don’t surf the web or text message with it.  I bought it a few years ago when I was commuting on the TCH to work in Newfoundland and it was handy to have while traveling in the winter.   I am a techie and I would love to buy a phone and use the latest and greatest gadgets, but I cannot afford it.  I checked a Blackberry out from Telus and it would cost me $75/month just for a basic plan.  The iPhone came out in Canada and a basic plan by Rogers is $30/month, but I’ve heard that the screen keyboard on it is horrible and it is buggy crashing on users all the time.

I think cellphone service providers are getting like the banks and will nickle and dime you into poverty if you are not careful.  Now in Canada text messages that you receive on your phone will be a charge to customers without a text messaging plan.  Here’s an article explaining the change:

In a course I completed recently for my masters one group looked at the trend of using cellphones for learning.  I wonder how this will affect any future plans to extend learning to the mobile market?
